Dealing With Doubt, Loneliness And Disappointment

“Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.  And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.” – Matthew 28: 16-17

I have always found this verse interesting. These eleven disciples had lived with Jesus for several years, saw Him operate with miracles, teachings, etc. Now they have watched Him DIE and even more miraculously come back to life. They have eaten with Him again and now as he prepares to leave them they come meet Him where they were instructed. And despite all this fact some doubted as they began to worship.

I wonder how many times you may feel the exact same way. Perhaps we believe Jesus is not there because we have not seen Him answer the prayers we offer. Could it be that we receive a decision that we are unhappy about (college rejection letter, not making the team or cast, having to move again) and you may wonder where God is in those times? As I’ve considered times where I might be tempted to doubt as the disciples did I am remined of three things.

  1. God gives us all perfect gifts even when I don’t recognize them.
  2. Am I THANKFUL for all that God has given me and done for me?
  3. God PROMISES to never leave me or forsake me. Even though I do not FEEL like God is there, because I can trust His character He is there and says nothing can separate me from the love of God. I am struck by the lyrics of the song above describing time we might “doubt” or desperately feel away from God and his love…

When it feels like surgery
And it burns like third degree
And you wonder what is it worth?
When your insides breaking in
And you feel that ache again
And you wonder
What’s giving birth?
If you could let the pain of the past go
Of your soul
None of this is in your control
If you could only let your guard down
You could learn to trust me somehow
I swear, that I won’t let you go
If you could only let go your doubts
If you could just believe in me now
I swear, that I won’t let you go

I won’t let you go
When your fear is currency
And you feel that urgency
You want peace but there’s war in your head
Maybe that’s where life is born
When our façades are torn
Pain gives birth to the promise ahead
If you could let the pain of the past go
Of your soul
None of this is in your control

If this describes your life and experience right now know that God loves you, that Jesus’
sacrifice is sufficient for you that His provision of salvation changes you and can make you a new person. In those times of doubt recognize it is God who will not let you go.
Prayers in this season,
